The president of Danville’s branch of the NAACP, Ed Butler, is calling for the release of more information regarding the fatal shooting of a man by Danville Police in June….
Butler was speaking at Tuesday’s Danville City Council meeting. He also had a request….
Last week Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy released the results of an Illinois State Police investigation into the shooting of 34-year-old Danathe Gulliford. Lacy said the officers were found to be justified in using deadly force after Gulliford refused to show his hands after a traffic stop. It was discovered that Gulliford had a loaded gun in his pocket at the time.
After the report was released Butler called for a calm response to it. He said those upset need to continue to ”stand down and solve the issue in a lawful, legal way.”
Although the NAACP is calling for the release of police video of the incident, State’s Attorney Lacy says the video on one of the squad cars was not working properly. It did not illuminate property in the dark to allow for a full and unobstructed recording of events. ”The video obtained is only partially visible as most of the view is so dark that most of the images depicted are not recognizable,” said Lacy in a report she released last week. She says the video obtained from another police unit on the scene was working properly, but did not capture the shooting incident.
