A Hoopeston man is facing nine years in prison after being sentenced on drug charges in Vermilion County Circuit Court. Thirty-two year old Jordan Carswell was given a four year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to delivery of methamphetamine.
The four year sentence will run consecutive to a five year sentence for Bringing Contraband Into a Penal Institution. Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy says an Investigator from the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department uncovered a scheme this summer between Carswell and his girlfriend whereby the girlfriend would send controlled substances to Carswell at the Public Safety Building. Essentially, the girlfriend would send letters to Carswell at the jail, and those letters contained areas of dissolved methamphetamine.
On August 1st, the jail intercepted a letter from the girlfriend and addressed to Carswell containing a crossword puzzle on which there was a yellowish stain. The stain was tested and found to contain methamphetamine.
In return for his plea agreement, other charges against Carswell regarding a fight with another inmate were dismissed. Charges against Carswell’s girlfriend are pending a later trial date.
