Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden has released the identity of a young Danville man who was fatally shot over the weekend. She says the victim is 19-year-old Austin Camareno of Danville. Camareno was a 2018 graduate of Schlarman Academy, and is the son of Jennifer Gill and Juan Camareno Jr.
Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department Chief Investigator Michael Hartshorn says the shooting occurred at a home in the 800 block of Warrington Avenue. He says an 18-year-old man from Danville was arrested on preliminary charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery with a firearm. The suspect’s name was being withheld, though, pending the filing of formal charges by the Vermilion County State’s Attorney.
According to Hartshorn, the preliminary investigation found the two men were reportedly friends. Hartshorn says investigators were told they were handling a gun when it discharged. The shooting occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. Saturday (December 8, 2018.). Camareno was driven to the hospital in a private vehicle and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center.
The death remains under investigation by both the Sheriff’s Department and Coroner’s Office.
