Although the federal government’s partial shutdown continues, many federal services in our area continue uninterrupted. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie notes that the VA is fully funded for fiscal year 2019. Secretary Wilkie says it is thanks to the leadership of President Trump and Congress.
‘’We thank the President and Congress for their commitment to our nation’s heroes in funding VA, and stand ready to provide all the VA benefits and services our Veterans have earned,’’ said Secretary Wilkie in a news release.
Mail delivery is also continuing…unaffected by the partial government shutdown. The U.S. Postal Service gets its funding from selling stamps and other items, and not from Congressional appropriations.
And if you are worried that the government shutdown might affect getting your Social Security, SSI, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) or food stamps….you can relax. Those payments and disbursements are also continuing despite the shutdown.
As of last Friday at midnight, though, many federal employees nationwide have either been furloughed, or they are continuing to work and wondering when they will get paid.
President Trump has been standing firm on his demand for $5-billion dollars for a wall for border security. And he has said the government will not re-open until he gets the money needed for the wall.
