Local activist Mary Catherine Roberson says one of her main passions is trying to stop the gun violence in Danville. Roberson was one of six African American leaders involved in a panel discussion Wednesday at Danville Area Community College as part of Black History Month. Another was Danville Vice-Mayor Brenda Brown who said one of the ways she judges local race relations is by the number of non-African Americans who participate in the MLK Mass Choir….
Everyone on the panel is hopeful ways can be found to improve local race relations, but they agreed it is going to take some work. Pastor Thomas Miller said one thing that makes him ‘’very concerned is the lack of diversity within teachers.’’ Miller is also concerned that young Black students do not seem to realize their own potential…
Mayor Rickey Williams, another member of the panel, urged citizens to get involved. ‘’Volunteer your time,’’ said Williams. ‘’Everyone can make a difference if they get involved,’’ he added. Williams leads the Project Success Program in Vermilion County besides being Danville’s mayor. He noted one area where citizens can volunteer to help is the Big Brothers – Big Sisters program of Vermilion County which is starting again.
