Danville City Council members have given the green light to some major improvements along Denmark and Old Ottawa Roads. The Council agreed to set aside $1-million dollars in State Motor Fuel Tax Funds toward the $3.5 million dollar project. Community Development Director David Schnelle says it will take two full construction seasons to complete the project. The rest of the funding is coming from Federal STU (Surface Transportation Urban) and State of Illinois ITEP (Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program) funds.
Schnelle says safety will be improved for pedestrians who walk along Denmark Road because a new walkway will be separated from the road by a guardrail. The causeway guardrail is also going to be removed and replaced. Denmark Road will be resurfaced and Old Ottawa Road will also be improved…including reducing a curve along the road. And new LED lighting will be placed along the causeway on Denmark Road.
Also last night (Tuesday, February 19, 2019) the City Council approved a contract for extension of the Jackson Street shared use path from English to Voorhees Street.
Alderwoman Sherry Pickering said her area could definitely use the funds after being told the MFT funds could be spent elsewhere. Vice Mayor Brenda Brown said she, too, would like to see the money spent in other areas of the community which she said are ‘’pretty raggedy.’’
