Danville City Council members meet Tuesday evening (April 2, 2019) and are expected to vote on proposals to hike the hotel-motel tax and the fee for large solid waste set-outs. Mayor Rickey Williams said last week that he planned to keep those items on the agenda, but he noted they may not pass.
Some city council members have said they fear raising the hotel-motel tax might have an adverse effect on Danville’s efforts to continue to host the NJCAA Division II Men’s National Basketball Tournament.
The proposal being considered by the city council would raise the hotel-motel tax by 2-percent, but some have suggested 1-percent instead.
The proposal being considered large solid waste collections would raise the fee from $75 to $300.
Alderman Steve Foster has suggested that instead of raising fees…the city could dip into more than $4-million dollars that is sitting in reserve funds for solid waste and local sanitary sewers.
A proposed second draft of the city’s proposed 2019-2020 Fiscal Year Budget is scheduled to be presented and discussed at the meeting.
The council meets at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building at 17 West Main Street.
