Safety improvements are expected to finally come this year to a Danville railroad crossing which was the site of a tragic accident nearly two years ago. Danville Community Development Director David Schnelle told members of a city council committee last night (Tuesday) agreements have been reached with the CSX Railroad and other parties for safety improvements at the Griffin Street crossing located near Garfield Park.
Schnelle is proposing using some left-over Community Development Block Grant funds from 2016 to help fund the city’s share for the improvements. But Alderman Lloyd Randle notes those funds were originally intended to improve east side neighborhoods…
The City of Danville has been working to get new safety improvements at the crossing ever since a boy was struck and killed by a train while riding his bicycle in July of 2017. Improvements being proposed include gates for both cars and pedestrian traffic.
