A Danville teenager has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges in the stabbing death of a local man. Malika Anthony was only 15 when she was arrested for the May 30, 2017 stabbing of 43-year-old Kuron Kimmons. She was originally charged as an adult with multiple counts of first-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to an amended charge of second-degree murder Monday (April 29, 2019).
Sentencing will occur later but under terms of the plea agreement Anthony was guaranteed she will receive 20 years in prison.
She will be required to serve at least half of that sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy told Judge Nancy Fahey that if the case would have gone to trial the prosecution would have introduced a video of the incident. Lacy said the video shows the defendant was involved in a fight with several other individuals. Anthony admitted today that she stabbed Kimmons to protect her sister. But Lacy said Anthony’s belief that deadly force was necessary was unreasonable.
Anthony is now 17 and will be sentenced in June.
