Danville Police would get body cameras and some new dash cameras in squad cars if a grant application is approved. Over $125-thousand dollars is being sought from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Board.
The grant would supply funds for 65 body cameras. Currently Danville Police do not wear body cameras, but there are some cameras in squad cars. The grant would not require a local match.
Once the squad car camera is activated it would automatically activate the officer’s body camera. Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr., says the body cameras ”protect both sides.”
Danville Police have already purchased three of the types of dash-mounted cameras that would come with the grant. And city council members were told Tuesday night that they are very durable, and police have had no problems with them.
