Union employees at Danville’s Viscofan plant are on strike. The members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, local 686, walked out early this morning after earlier calling for more pay and a contract that supports families.
The union had said that the company’s proposal would limit the ability of workers to keep up with the cost of living and make it harder for them to care for their families.
There are more than 240 workers in the union at the plant which makes casings for meats. Tim Miller, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 686, said earlier that union members ‘’work incredibly hard every day to create the high-quality products that helped the company generate nearly a billion dollars in revenue.’’ The union says Viscofan management has proposed no wage increases for the next year for the union employees. And the union says the company forces workers to come in early for mandatory overtime. The union says that disrupts family schedules and takes parents away from their children.
Our News Department attempted to contact the company earlier for a comment on the negotiations but got no response.
