Members of the Executive-Legislation Committee of the Vermilion County Board are recommending the full board approve two ordinances regarding cannabis sales. One of them outlines guidelines concerning the placement of cannabis businesses or dispensaries within the county. And the other would allow the county to tax the retail sale of cannabis and to regulate certain aspects of those sales after January 1, 2020 when a new state law on cannabis takes effect.
The proposal being sent to the full Vermilion County Board for consideration would allow the county to place a 3.75 percent tax on retail cannabis sales in unincorporated areas of the county. And a 3 percent tax would be collected for the county on cannabis sales within the jurisdiction of municipalities. Cannabis purchased for medical purposes under the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program Act, would be exempt from the tax.
Vermilion County Board members are expected to consider the proposals at their November 12th meeting.
