Although some Halloween activities will be held around the area this weekend, Police Chief Christopher Yates is reminding citizens that Thursday, October 31st, is the official night for it in Danville. He says police want everyone to enjoy it, but also be safe.
Children up to the age of 12 can go door to door and ‘Trick or Treat’ in Danville between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. Thursday.
Police are offering a number of Halloween safety tips:
For Costumes:
- Avoid costumes that could cause you to trip.
- Make sure your footwear fits properly.
- Avoid masks that could reduce your vision.
- If you wear dark clothing, be sure to place reflective tape on it or carry a flashlight.
- Be careful of open flames or other heat sources from decorations which might cause costumes to catch on fire.
- Remember that costumes may scare pets. The animal may not recognize a child in their costume.
For Treats:
- Check the treat before eating it. Children should wait until they get home before eating them so parents can check them.
- Throw away any unpackaged treat, or ones where the wrapper has already been opened.
- If you see something suspicious about a treat, call the police.
Stay Safe Rules:
- Respect your neighbors and property belonging to other people. And only visit homes in your own neighborhood.
- Use walkways and only go to homes where the porch lights are on.
- Travel in groups of 3-4 if not accompanied by an adult.
- Carry a flashlight.
- As you begin, point out a location where you can meet if you get separated from your friends or family.
- Look both ways before crossing a street and never step out from between parked cars.
- Do not start before 5:00 p.m. and stop your ‘Trick or Treat’ rounds at 8:00 p.m. (Again…these tips – including the times – are from Danville Police. Trick or Treat times may be different for other communities.)
Danville Police also ask that residents who want to participate in the festivities turn their porch light on. When you greet children at the door you should not ask them to come into your home. And if your child is making Halloween rounds without you, make sure you know who they are with, where they are going and who will be supervising them.
If you are driving while children are making Trick or Treat rounds, Police ask that you drive with extreme caution.
