Members of the Vermilion County Board have approved placing a tax on cannabis sales that occur after a new state law takes effect on January 1st. The county will be collecting a 3.75 percent tax on retail cannabis sales which occur in unincorporated areas of the county, and 3-percent tax on cannabis sales within municipalities.
Cannabis purchased for medical purposes under the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program Act, will be exempt from the tax.
Also last night (November 12, 2019) members of the County Board approved their new budget and tax levy. The FY 2019-2020 levy totals over $14.6 million dollars. Steve Fourez, chairman of the County Board’s Finance and Personnel Committee, said expenditures during the current fiscal year are ”pretty much tracking as anticipated.” He noted that with 13 days left in this fiscal year the committee has no concerns or issues. But as County Board Chairman Larry Baughn thanked fellow board members and department heads for their work on the budget he said it has been trying times for some departments.
Also during their meeting, members of the Vermilion County Board approved a new three year contract agreement for County Highway employees represented by Teamsters Local 26. Under the agreement the employees will receive a 3-percent pay hike over each of the next three years.
