The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program known as VITA is looking for volunteers to help with free tax preparations. The East Central Illinois Community Action Agency partners with the Danville Public Library, along with the Internal Revenue Service, to provide free tax preparations for those who qualify.
Individuals who earn up to $30-thousand dollars annually, families earning up to $55-thousand dollars, and senior citizens and individuals with disabilities are eligible to receive VITA services. There are no residency requirements. The tax preparation services are offered free of charge by IRS-certified tax preparers. All returns are filed electronically and customers could have their refund deposited into their checking or savings account in as little as 7 to 14 days.
Community Action is actively recruiting volunteers for VITA. The volunteers may serve as tax preparers or greeters. Volunteers are needed to cover week nights and Saturday morning sessions. Hours are flexible but those interested in volunteering must be at least 16 years old and have basic computer skills.
A VITA kick-off event will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at the Danville Public Library. It will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the first floor Community Room.
Anyone who would like to volunteer can contact Cicely Dowell at (217)-554-9128, or by email at cdowell@comaction.org.
