An investigation continues into a Saturday morning fatal shooting of a person by police in the rural West Terre Haute, Indiana area. Indiana State Police are handling the investigation. They say Vigo County Sheriff’s Police responded to a report of a suspicious subject, and when deputies arrived they found a vehicle with a rear window broken. Deputies attempted to locate the suspect by using their PA system and asking the suspect to come out of a wooded area.
Deputies say at that point the subject started shooting at them. The deputies immediately took cover and called for assistance.
Other officers arrived and eventually officers located the suspect. State Police were told the suspect was ordered to put down his weapon and show his hands. It was at that point, though, that the suspect pointed his gun at officers and shot at the officers. The suspect was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire.
No serious injuries were reported among the officers however one deputy suffered a badly sprained ankle.
Agencies that were on the scene included units from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, West Terre Haute Police and Terre Haute Police.
Once the investigation is completed Indiana State Police Detectives will submit a full report of the incident to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
