Godsmack frontman Sully Erna says that the band is scrapping all plans to tour in 2020 in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Erna revealed to SiriusXM, “We were going out with The Pretty Reckless to do a major tour in July through September, but all that's gone now.” Erna added that he doesn't see the crisis resolving itself fast enough for people to “jump back into big crowds yet.”
Erna explained, “I do think there's gonna be a lag where people are gonna (say), 'Maybe I'm not gonna go right to a concert yet or a sports event and be around a lot of people; there's lingering parts of this thing going on.'”
He continued, “And . . . with people losing houses and their jobs and stuff like that, I think when it comes back, they're gonna be like, 'All right. I'm glad it's over. Let's get back to work. But I probably should replenish my savings account before I start buying concert tickets.'”
Erna has told us before that playing live is his favorite part of being in a band: “I mean, the band just likes playing. You know, that's really the reward. The writing and the recording process is so tedious. The real reward happens when we play live. Whether it be a radio festival, our own tour, special events kind of thing, I think that's what the band looks forward to the most, is just being able to get onstage and play for the people.”
Godsmack will spend the rest of the year working on a new album while mapping out a return to the road in 2021.
