Danville District 118 School Board members are scheduled to hear an update Wednesday evening (April 22, 2020) on how things are going with remote learning. Board president Bill Dobbles says he has lots of questions. For example, ‘’How are grades going to be figured? Will kids be automatically promoted?’’ And, ‘’so you’re taking biology – what grade do you get?’’
Dobbles says he is sure there are some wonderful things going on with the District 118 remote learning program. But he wonders if it’s working. The Danville School Board president adds he imagines it’s a struggle for parents to get even the really good students to participate in remote learning.
The agenda for Wednesday evening’s school board meeting lists several items under the update on Remote Learning – including parent concerns on the number of learning platforms being utilized, assessment of staff participation, statistics on student participation at all levels in the district and grading criteria for student work. Dobbles says he and some other board members want to discuss all of those areas along with future dates and plans for graduation.
Some of the other items on the agenda include:
- Plans for honoring retirees
- Plans for student and teacher retrieval of personal belongings.
(When students and teachers left their buildings they had no idea schools would remain closed for the rest of the school year.)
- Possibility of food distribution at South View, Mark Denman, and Meade Park Schools, or public housing.
Dobbles would like to see the food distributions done at other schools – instead of just Danville High School. ‘’What happens to all of the families that don’t have transportation?’’ — asked Dobbles.
