Safety improvements are coming soon to a Danville railroad crossing which was the site of a fatal train-bicycle collision nearly three years ago. The City of Danville has been working with the CSX Railroad on a project to improve safety at the Griffin Street railroad crossing near Garfield Park. It was in July of 2017 that a Danville boy was killed while riding his bicycle in the area when he was struck by a train.
The project will add dedicated pedestrian crossings and approaches along both sides of Griffin Street to separate pedestrian traffic from vehicular traffic. CSX Railroad will also be adding roadway and pedestrian gates with constant warning time circuitry.
In order to allow for the improvements the Griffin Street CSX Railroad crossing will be closed from approximately 7:00 a.m. Monday, April 27, 2020 until late afternoon on Friday, May 8th, 2020. So motorists who normally travel that route along Griffin Street will need to detour around the area. Only local traffic will be permitted on the segment of Griffin located north of the crossing to Fairchild Street during construction. South of the crossing, traffic will be able to come as far north as Mabin Street.
Again, motorists will need to use an alternate route during construction because of the closure of Griffin Street in that area. Motorists and pedestrians traveling in the area of the construction zone should use caution.
