Illinois reported 2,724 new COVID-19 cases in Friday’s daily update. Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said that’s the highest single-day total but noted the number of cases has risen due to increased availability and frequency of testing. Governor JB Pritzker said Friday the state surpassed his daily goal of 10,000 COVID-19 tests. A list of testing sites and criteria can be found at coronavirus.illinois.gov.
The state reported 108 additional deaths. Illinois totals are 39,658 cases with 1,785 deaths. Ezike said 4,828 Illinois residents are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 with 1,225 in intensive care and 709 patients on ventilators.
Sangamon County reported 14 new COVID-19 cases, including 12 new cases from The Villas Senior Care Community in Sherman with two staff members and 10 residents confirmed with the coronavirus. The senior facility has now reported 26 cases (18 residents, eight staff members) with two deaths. Eight of The Villas residents are inpatients at HSHS St. John’s Hospital while six residents are hospitalized at Memorial Medical Center. The Sangamon County totals are now 87 cases including six deaths. Memorial reports nine cases currently hospitalized, five of whom are Sangamon County residents, while 14 cases are in St. John’s including eight from Sangamon County.
