Evanescence has released “Wasted On You,” the first original song from the band in nine years. The track and its accompanying video are from The Bitter Truth, the band's upcoming fourth studio album and first all-new one since 2011.
The video for “Wasted On You” was shot by each band member — lead singer/pianist Amy Lee, bassist Tim McCord, drummer Will Hunt, lead guitarist Troy McLawhorn and guitarist Jen Majura — on their iPhones while currently in isolation at their homes.
Lee explained, “'Wasted On You' wasn't the song we were planning to release first, but when the whole world went into indefinite lockdown and everything changed, so did the feeling and meaning of what we wanted to say right now. I didn't write these lyrics about what we're all now going through, but somehow that's exactly what they are.”
Lee told us a while back that the band always works hard to make its songs sound epic: “The thing about our music is, and about our live shows and our songs, is that so much goes into it besides just guitars, bass and drums and vocal. I always want to do these, like, ethereal background vocals, and then do, like, synth loops and drum loops and all this interesting stuff going on in a rock song, but it's kind of a big deal and a lot of work.”
“Wasted On You” is the first in a series of songs that the band will release from The Bitter Truth incrementally, culminating in the release of the full album. If all goes well, the band hopes to tour later this year.
