The Illinois Department of Corrections has released a list of almost 4,000 inmates who have been released from the state’s prisons since March 1st. The list includes all inmates who have either had their sentence commuted or were released.
Some Illinois lawmakers had called for the list to be released, including State Representative Tom Bennett of Gibson City. Bennett’s legislative district includes the Pontiac Correctional Center and several employees at the Danville Correctional Center live in Representative Bennett’s district. Bennett had called on Governor JB Pritzker to be transparent about the inmates who have been released.
The list released by IDOC shows at least 64 of the inmates released had been serving time for murder, while others had been sentenced for violent crimes.
Representative Bennett had noted earlier this week that a list had been posted on the Illinois Department of Corrections website two weeks ago showing the names of over 700 inmates who were released early. But he said the list had been removed from the website. Now, IDOC has released a list of almost 4,000 inmates who have been released.
The IDOC website also shows the one Danville Correctional Officer who had tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus has recovered.
