A Memorial Day tradition will continue in Danville this year after all. The Danville Rotary Club had announced on its Facebook page that Rotary Memorial Way was being canceled this year due to the uncertain length of the COVID-19 virus outbreak. The club’s Board of Directors had said in the post that it wants to keep all of its wonderful volunteers safe. But some members of the club have decided they will place the thousands of miniature American Flags along North Vermilion Street after all.
The Rotary Club will not be placing small name cards out with the flags this year along Vermilion Street because they are not selling sponsors. In past years the club sold sponsors for the flags for $5 apiece. The cards listed not only the person’s name but also information about their service in the armed forces if they served.
Money raised from sponsoring the flags is used to support the Vermilion County War Museum, plus some projects at the VA Illiana Health Care System along with some community projects.
In addition to placing the flags along North Vermilion Street, the Danville Rotary Club also puts the flags around the Vermilion County War Museum and at local war memorials. So thanks to the Danville Rotary Club the flags will be back this year after all.
