The City of Danville is allowing recreational fires again. The fires had been banned temporarily, but Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. says the ban on recreational fires is lifted immediately. It means you may use burn pits and have wiener roasts. Citizens can also use grills and smokers.
If you are planning a recreational fire you should follow safety guidelines by making sure the fire is not too close to a building. You should also call (217) 442-0153 prior to having the fire in order to notify the fire department about the date, time, and location of the recreational fire.
The City of Danville has also announced it will continue to pick up yard waste (grass, leaves, shrubbery, trimmings, brush and garden waste) via the toter system for those who have purchased 2020 Yard Waste Stickers. Yard waste will be picked up on the same day as your normal garbage collection during the rest of May. Starting in June, yard waste will be picked up every other week on the same day as your garbage collection.
Items that the City of Danville will not collect with yard waste include stumps, landscape timbers, railroad ties, dirt, gravel, rocks, straw, hay bales, pumpkins, and Christmas trees that have been flocked or have tinsel on them.
Residents who wish to purchase a yard waste sticker may call the Danville Public Works office at 217-431-2288 or 217-431-2334 to purchase a sticker over the phone with a debit or credit card. Residents may also send a check for $40 per sticker to the Public Works office at
1155 East Voorhees Street. The City will mail all stickers, receipts and brochures with specific zone information to each customer.
Residents with a current 2020 Yard Waste Sticker may drop off yard waste at the Yard Waste Facility at no additional charge. Yard Waste customers must call one of the numbers listed above to schedule a drop off and provide proof of sticker purchase when dropping off items. The yard waste site is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until noon and from 1:00 until 3:30 p.m. On Friday through Sunday the Yard Waste Facility is closed. Anyone with questions about the program may call the City of Danville Public Works Department at
(217) 431-2288.
