A Memorial Day tradition continues in Danville this weekend as hundreds of small American flags line what each year becomes known as ‘Rotary Memorial Way’. Members of the Danville Rotary Club placed the flags along North Vermilion Street early Friday morning. Danville Area Community College President Stephen Nacco was among them.
This year the small cards which are usually with the flags are missing because the club decided not to sell sponsors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nacco hopes the cards will be back next year…
{‘’It wasn’t so much as selling, it’s just remembering people like my father in Korea – and all of the fathers and uncles, and cousins, and aunts who ever served. I mean that’s really what we’d like to get back next year,’’ said Nacco. ‘’Not so much as money – because the money was always about scholarships and things like that. It was more about just recognizing that in our area we had so many people who served – and having their names on it is really a thrill.’’}
The flags are also placed around the various war memorials in Danville and the Vermilion County War Museum.
The flags line both sides of North Vermilion Street from Danville’s downtown area all the way to the northern city limits.
