Vermilion County Treasurer Darren Duncan says he is amazed that property tax payments have been rolling in despite the coronavirus pandemic. Duncan says the payments have been a little slow but of the approximately $93-million dollars which was billed, county taxpayers have already paid over $40-million dollars. Today (June 12, 2020) is when the first installment on the bills is due but Duncan announced earlier that taxpayers have until September 4th to pay their taxes without a penalty.
The waiver of the penalty until after September 4th was done because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Duncan told VermilionCountyFirst.com News that nearly $6-million dollars was received by his office in one day this week when mortgage companies made payments from money that had been held in escrow accounts.
The County Treasurer says the first distribution of this new money to Vermilion County taxing bodies will occur during the first week of July. And he noted school districts especially need that money as they prepare to launch the 2020-2021 school year.
