Police in Champaign are investigating the shooting of a 16-year-old boy. Police responded to the area of Phillips Drive and Nelson Court for a reported shooting shortly before 4:30 Monday afternoon. They learned the youth had been walking in the area when a vehicle approached and there was an exchange of gunfire, according to the preliminary investigation. Police add the shooting is not believed to be a random act of violence.
The young victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the lower part of his body, but police said the wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.
Champaign Police are asking nearby businesses or residences with exterior surveillance camera systems to contact them. They say it is believed video footage may aid in the investigation.
