Area residents may be able to play disc golf at Danville’s Ellsworth Park later this fall. A new disc golf course is just part of the improvements being made to the park on the city’s west side.
On Wednesday (June 24, 2020), some Public Works employees were busy pouring concrete for a sidewalk that surrounds one of the new playgrounds that is under construction.

(This is just part of the new playground being built at Ellsworth Park.)
Steve Lane, Danville’s Superintendent of Parks and Public Property, says he has fielded lots of calls from people interested in the disc golf course. And Lane says that is probably the thing that excites him most because people of all ages can play.
In addition to the new playground area and 9-hole disc golf course, other improvements coming to Ellsworth Park include a multi-purpose football or soccer field, restrooms, a basketball court and shelter.
Lane notes the work being done by the Public Works employees counts as the city’s in-kind contribution in order to receive a $373,900 grant. The Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant is from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
The work must be done by May 1st of 2021 under the provisions of the grant, but Lane says work crews cannot spend all their time there.
Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr., said when the city won the grant, that it will be ‘’a tremendous boon to Ellsworth Park and the entire city.’’
