Vermilion County Board members learned Tuesday night that the county will likely end the fiscal year with a budget surplus.
County Board Chairman Larry Baughn said the county’s audit was recently completed.
Board member Dr. Wes Bieritz said the county had budgeted $14 million for the last fiscal year, and is expected to finish the year with a surplus of around $1.8 million from the budgeted amount.
Baughn says the budget process is going well, but some things will have to change because of the pandemic.
“Our budget is going to surprise some people, and we’re going to just tighten our belts like everyone else has to, because we kind of have to expect the unexpected at this point,” he explained.
Baughn says the county department heads have been managing their resources well. He says the county has tried to cut costs wherever it has been able to, but there is not much more to cut any further.
