The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation says it was a Hoopeston man who died after being found unresponsive in an Iroquois County Jail cell on Wednesday (August 26, 2020). State Police officially released the name of the victim Thursday afternoon, saying he is 24-year-old Andre J. Maiden.
State Police are also probing another incident at the Iroquois County Jail which left an inmate hospitalized in critical condition.
The preliminary information indicates the first inmate was found unresponsive by Iroquois County Sheriff’s Deputies at approximately 7:11 p.m. Tuesday at the Iroquois County Jail. He was transported to an area hospital where at last report was still listed in critical condition.
The second inmate, Andre Maiden of Hoopeston, was found unresponsive by Iroquois County Sheriff’s Deputies on Wednesday (August 26, 2020) at approximately 11:15 a.m. Maiden was later pronounced dead.
The Kankakee County Coroner has scheduled an autopsy on Maiden for Friday morning (August 28th) in an effort to determine his cause of death.
Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police requested Illinois State Police investigate the circumstances surrounding both Maiden’s death and the hospitalization of the other inmate. At this time DCI (Division of Criminal Investigation) officers from the Illinois State Police are only saying their investigation is continuing. They say no other information is being released at this time.
