The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin replacing the two bridges carrying Interstate 74 over the Salt Fork beginning Monday, September 21st.
IDOT has long planned to replace the bridges, which are located between the MLK Drive and G Street exits on I-74. Funding for the project is being provided through the Rebuild Illinois capital improvement campaign.
One lane will be open in each direction at all times during construction. Traffic will shift to one single bridge via a median crossover while the other bridge is being replaced.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area.
The Salt Fork bridge project is one of a number of construction projects along Interstate 74. The bridges over the railroad line east of St. Joseph are also being replaced, and the interchange with Interstate 57 is being reconstructed in the next few years, with several side street overpasses also being replaced.
The bridges over the railroad yard in Champaign are currently being replaced, and overpass work is being done at the St. Joseph exit.
