Indiana State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place early Sunday morning near Montezuma.
State police say 23-year-old Omaree Shay Roby of Milwaukee was shot by officers after he fired shots at them after fleeing from officers and striking a bullet at a squad car during an earlier chase that began in Terre Haute.
Roby allegedly stole a vehicle in Evansville at gunpoint and then traveled north on U.S. 41 to Terre Haute, where a Vigo County deputy observed him at at 4:22 a.m. driving at a high rate of speed. Officers pursued Roby along State Route 63, reaching speeds up to 120 miles per hour.
Officers successfully deployed a spike strip along the highway near Clinton, which flattened the car’s tires. Roby continued driving until crashing near the interchange of U.S. 36 and State Route 63.
Roby was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment of injuries.
Five officers who were involved in the shooting incident have been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
