Danville city council members have approved a zoning change allowing a new convenience store to open in a residential neighborhood on Williams Street, but the business will not be allowed to sell alcohol.
Aldermen voted unanimously to an amendment to the zoning change recommended by Brenda Brown that would bar the business at 701 E. Williams St. from serving alcoholic products.
Brown said she has concerns about alcohol being sold in a residential neighborhood.
Aldermen failed to pass a second amendment from Robert Williams to ban the sale of tobacco products. That motion failed by a 9-3 vote, with Brown, Williams and Tom Stone voting in favor.
In other business, Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. said Danville Development LLC is currently doing a traffic study for the location of the proposed new casino on Eastgate Drive.
Williams also said the city received a $7 million grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for the northwest pump station and sewer repair project. Williams said IEPA is forgiving a little over $2 million of its loan, meaning the city will only have to pay for about $5 million of the project cost.
