Several festivals and parades have already been canceled this year in the Danville area because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and portions of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in January could be next on the list.
Sandra Finch, the Human Resources Administrator for the City of Danville, told city council members Tuesday night that organizers are looking at ways to modify the celebration to make it safe for the public.
Finch says the annual banquet will likely be called off due to large gathering size problems. She says a service is still planned at St. James United Methodist Church, but she says it might not be a public event.
“We’re trying to work out the details regarding how many people we can let in, that time of thing, whether or not it will be invitational, because there is a capacity limit with COVID at St. James,” Finch said.
Applications for the annual $4,000 scholarship given out to a high school senior in the community are now available, and can be picked up at City Hall, local schools and churches. Applications must be turned into the city by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4th.
Finch says the winner will likely be announced at the church service this year.
