The City of Danville is backing off of parts of its sewer fee hike, but keeping the residential fee increase the same.
City Engineer Sam Cole now says he will ask aldermen next week to approval a proposal that would only increase the minimum commercial and industrial sewer fee to $42.50 instead of $59.50.
Single-family residential fees would still increase to a flat fee of $29.75 under the revised proposal. Multi-unit complexes would see a proposed fee of $17 per unit instead of $17.85.
Residential monthly sewer fees would only increase by $1 each year under the new plan, and the proposed fee hike for surcharges has also been reduced.
Cole says in a letter that the revised fee increases came after hearing “comments, concerns and suggestions” from residents this past week.
The proposed fee increases, which were announced during a presentation Tuesday morning, brought heated criticism from several residents and some aldermen.
Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. says the proposed fee increases will help the city pay for repairs and replacement costs of its sewer lines, which he says are deteriorating.
