Danville High School is expected to join a majority of other schools across the state in delaying the winter boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
District 118 school board members will vote on a recommendation from athletic director Mark Bacys Wednesday night where DHS would not have basketball games this winter.
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced on October 27th that basketball was being considered a high-risk sport, and only practices would be allowed moving forward, but the IHSA’s board of directors voted to defy the state’s guidance the next day and allow high schools to move forward with a winter season.
Bacys and district superintendent Dr. Alicia Geddis both say the IHSA’s move would risk the district being held liable in case of COVID-19 cases, as it would be going against recommendations of state government.
So far, less than 10 teams in the state, and none in the Danville area, have committed to play a regular winter season.
