Students and parents in District 118 should know by Friday what the district’s learning plans are for the rest of the fall semester and heading into January.
Superintendent Alicia Geddis told school board members Wednesday night that parents should prepare to transition their students from in-person schooling to some type of remote learning, whether fully remote or a hybrid model, as has been done at various points since the school year began.
Geddis says the Illinois State Board of Education has told school districts to make changes for the time between Thanksgiving week and Christmas break, and possibly even into January, as the state experiences a rise in COVID-19 cases. She says administrators are trying to decide whether to hold a portion of December classes in-person or not.
“That’s a long time for us not to have any physical contact…and so I’m just trying to balance whether we can come back for two weeks and then go back out,” she explained.
School board members did approve the recommended plan for winter sports, if the Illinois Department of Public Health allows sports to happen in the coming months. Boys’ and girls’ bowling and boys’ swimming received the green light from board members, but they did not approve high school basketball, as the state considers it a high-risk sport.
