Hundreds of children in the Danville area will have a bright Christmas thanks to the U.S. Marine Corp Toys for Tots program. Volunteers involved in the program watched over a toy distribution Wednesday which continues today at St. James United Methodist Church in Danville. It is for families that signed-up for the program last month.
Megan Montgomery, coordinator of the local Toys for Tots campaign, says about 400 families signed-up. ”Kid-wise, it’s well over one-thousand (being served), but I can’t tell you an exact number,” she said during an interview with Vermilion County First News. The local Kenneth D. Bailey Detachment of the Marine Corp League helps run the program.
Montgomery says each child “gets about 3 toys, a stuffed animal, a book, and each family gets a game and five stocking-stuffers.”
This year the toy distribution was spread out over two days because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
