The Vermilion County Health Department reported 88 new COVID-19 cases on Monday evening, and the outbreak at the Danville Correctional Center continues to grow.
Figures from the Illinois Department of Corrections show 10 more cases have been confirmed among staff members at the state-owned prison, and 136 more cases have occurred among inmates. More than 40 percent of the inmate population has tested positive for the virus since mid-March, and the number of cases has been growing in recent days. There are currently 571 prisoners who have active cases in Danville, and 53 staff are still positive.
Vermilion County Health Department Administrator Doug Toole says the county currently has 744 active cases, which include inmates at the Danville prison. The county has seen a total of 5,441 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. The local positivity rate has dropped to 11.5 percent after having been at around 13 percent for several days.
The new cases in Vermilion County, broken down by age, are:
- One person in their 100’s
- Four people in their 90’s
- Three people in their 80’s
- 13 people in their 70’s
- 13 people in their 60’s
- 12 people in their 50’s
- 11 people in their 40’s
- 10 people in their 30’s
- 11 people in their 20’s
- Three teenagers
- Three grade-school-aged children
- Three preschoolers
- One infant
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced 4,453 new cases and 105 more deaths statewide on Monday. The state currently has a positivity rate of 7.2 percent, while in Region 6 it is 8.6 percent, excluding University of Illinois testing data.
