The Vermilion County Museum is changing its Abraham Lincoln birthday celebration for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is instead offing a unique way for children to get involved virtually.
Sue Richter, the director of the museum, says that normally there would be an open house at the Vermilion County Museum and a card contest for 4th and 5th grade students. However, both those events have been canceled.
The new virtual event is a Flat Lincoln photo blitz for kids of all ages. Richter says that Flat Lincoln is available for pickup in the outside information box at the museum or online at LookingforLincoln.org. Students of all ages are encourage to take Flat Lincoln to their favorite historic sites, even outside, and photograph him as he visits. These sites can also include a park, school, public building, special house, farm, library etc. Photos can be posted on Facebook using the hashtags #VCMLincoln and #FlatLincoln.
Photographs can be submitted beginning January 1st through February 12th.
The museum’s goal is for Lincoln to visit at least 200 places around Vermilion County. Staff will be checking the posts and highlighting some on the Vermilion County Museum Facebook page.
