Inmates at the Danville Correctional Center are continuing to contract COVID-19, and the facility is now also reporting one inmate’s death from the virus from last month.
New updates numbers from the Illinois Department of Corrections show 18 more cases among inmates at the prison since Wednesday. There have been a total of 746 cases among prisoners, which means that 48 percent of inmates have contracted the coronavirus overall. A total of 136 staff members have also contracted the virus.
Currently, there are 37 COVID cases among jail staff and 265 among inmates.
Danville currently has the second-highest amount of virus cases among inmates, with the correctional center in Lawrence County being the highest overall with 879 cases. The other state-owned prisons in central Illinois have smaller amounts of cases, with 440 cases at Taylorville, 283 at Pontiac and only 82 cases reported at the women’s prison in Decatur.
Besides Pontiac, the state’s two other maximum-security facilities, Menard and Stateville, have 194 cases and 301 cases, respectively.
