Members of Danville’s Public Works Committee have approved the purchase of three properties in order for West Williams Street to be realigned into a single, through street.
The properties are near the intersection of Harmon and Williams streets. West Williams is set to have an s-curve at the intersection that will allow it to become a single street to connect to OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center.
City Engineer Sam Cole says he is negotiating with Kirchner Building Center about relocating its lot to the north of where it currently sits.
Cole says he will try to coordinate the project with the street improvements at Madison Street so that the two streets are not shut down at the same time. He says whichever project is ready to start will be done first.
The $2.5 million project will allow for drivers from the south to access the hospital and medical campus without stop signs, since Logan Avenue will be permanently closed for the Carle Medical Campus project.
Committee members also approved a new 10-year contract with Comcast for cable television service to Danville. The company will pay the city a franchise fee of five percent of annual gross revenues. Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. says it will bring in $15,000 in annual revenue. The contract is not exclusive and other companies would still be allowed to operate within the city. The mayor says Comcast has had an agreement with the city for several years.
