The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee in Danville hosts it annual activities honoring the slain civil rights leader on Monday (January 18, 2021). But there will be no motorcade/parade this year as in past years. It has been cancelled, along with the normal M.L.K. banquet, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Danville Human Relations Director Sandra Finch says a Community-Wide Service honoring King will begin at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the St. James United Methodist Church. But because of the Covid-19 pandemic the general public will not be allowed to attend the service in person. But the public is invited to listen to a livestream of the service through a link on the St. James United Methodist Church website, or go to the church Facebook page.
The Reverend Frank Beard, Bishop of Illinois Area of The United Methodist Church, will be the virtual guest speaker for the service. Also during the service the Celebration Committee will award a $4,000 MLK Scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Danville.
