Four people have been charged in the shooting death of an Oakwood man who they intended to purchase drugs from, as well as the death of a teenager who participated in the crime.
Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department Captain Michael Hartshorn says 18-year-old Ali Bryant, 17-year-old Camarion Halthon, 16-year-old Jaevin Griggs and a 15-year-old boy face charges of murder, armed robbery, robbery and mob action in the deaths of 19-year-old Wyatt Bailey of Oakwood and 15-year-old Clayvonte Sloan of Rantoul.
Hartshorn says the four men charged as well as Sloan drove to Bailey’s mobile home at the intersection of Lee and Wayne streets in Oakwood Sunday around 2:45 p.m. intending to purchase drugs from him.
During the incident, Bailey and Sloan were shot. The four men charged plus Sloan then fled the scene, disposing of a handgun in the woods and leaving in a vehicle, but were stopped and arrested by a deputy within minutes along Route 150 between Oakwood and Danville. Sloan was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he later died.
Bryant is being held in the Public Safety Building while the younger three are at the Juvenile Detention Center. Bryant, Halthon and Griggs will make their first court appearances next month and are each being held on $10 million bond. The 15-year-old will be tried in juvenile court.
