A Chicago man is facing several charges after he was found to be driving under the influence of drugs and in possession of a firearm.
Indiana State Police say a trooper was patrolling State Route 63 near Covington on Sunday afternoon when he pulled over 36-year-old Anthony Atkins for driving 20 miles over the posted speed limit.
The officer detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a search, the trooper found multiple packages of edible candy containing THC and marijuana. He also located a handgun that was being carried in Atkins’ waistband. Further investigation revealed that the serial number appeared to have been removed from the handgun.
During the traffic stop, Atkins was showing signs of being under the influence. The trooper conducted a roadside investigation for impairment, then transported Atkins to a hospital for further investigation. During the course of his investigation, he was able to determine Atkins was under the influence of a controlled substance.
Atkins was taken into custody and transported to Warren County Jail. He has been charged with felonies of possessing a handgun with an altered serial number and possessing a weapon by a felon, as well as misdemeanors for driving under the influence, possessing and dealing marijuana and a weapons charge.
