The Vermilion County Museum is set to reopen next week after having been closed during the winter due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Museum Director Sue Richter appeared on WDAN’s Newsmakers on Tuesday morning. She says only the main museum building will be open to the public, during regular hours from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The Fithian Home will remain closed, but could reopen to small private tours later this year.
Richter says she has missed the 3,000 students who visit the museum each year, but she says YouTube videos will be available soon for teachers to show their kids about local history, and a virtual tour is also available on Google Maps.
With the usual birthday card collection for Abraham Lincoln’s birthday not being available for this year, Richter says children can instead print a “Flat Lincoln” online and take a picture and then send it to the museum.
“We just ask children when they put Flat Lincoln on with a picture or if they do a little video even, just to make sure that they post their name and their grade and what school they go to, so that we can keep track of this and hope that we can get children from every school in the county to participate,” Richter explained.
Richter also says she hopes to have the quilt show this year, and have interactive activities this summer for children related to city and county history, which all depends on the pandemic.
