A Danville alderman who also worked as the city’s engineer and for the Danville Sanitary District has passed away.
Tom Stone, who had represented Ward 5 on the Danville city council since 2011, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday, according to fellow alderman Mike Puhr. He had just turned 70 last month. Stone had attended a virtual city council meeting just a few hours before his death.
Stone retired after a long career in civil engineering. He served as Danville’s city engineer and public works director in the 1990’s, and most recently was an environmental specialist for the Danville Sanitary District.
Puhr says that Stone was “very involved” in the community, serving with various organizations. Stone was also a board member with the East Central Illinois Community Action Agency and the Danville Public Library Foundation, and was actively involved in the Lincoln Park neighborhood group. He and his wife, Mary Lou, who survives him, were active members of Central Christian Church in Danville. Puhr noted that the couple often came together to city council meetings when they were being held in-person.
“It’s still so blurry and tough all the way around,” Puhr said Friday night of Stone’s passing. “He touched a lot of lives.”
Funeral arrangements are pending at Kruger-Coan-Pape Funeral Home in Danville.
