The past few months have not been favorable to Danville’s Fischer Theatre, but management is looking forward to new events once again this month.
The historic theater, which reopened in the fall of 2019 after almost four decades, will host crowds for the first time in three months this next weekend due to the COVID-19 cases in the state. Theatre director Jason Rome says that while they haven’t been able to host crowds, virtual events such as Winter Sounds have been going on, and he says he and operations director Ashton Greer have been working on other areas of management such as upkeep and finances.
“It’s been a blessing and a curse to have been forced to close our doors to the public, only because that forced us to take the time to do a lot of that foundation building that’s going to help us continue on our trajectories,” he said.
Starting this Thursday, the Fischer will be the site of COVID-19 vaccination clinics weekly. Rome says this is being done through the Vermilion County Health Department. This coming Saturday, the theatre will host limited seating for its Winter Sounds event, and then have several movies later this month. Greer says the public should purchase tickets online, as there is a limit of 50 people per event.
“If we have 50 people that have bought tickets, we have to turn people away at the door,” she says. “So it shouldn’t be your primary plan to walk up and buy tickets now in this current situation. It’s not a good plan. We probably would have to turn you away, which would make us all sad. Get your tickets in advance online.”
