Students attending Danville’s Garfield Elementary School got to enjoy a unique event Friday night for Valentine’s Day.
Staff members at the school hosted a “Tunnel of Love” in the alley outside the school, where they greeted students and parents who drove by and gave each student a Valentine’s Day-themed goody bag.
The event was extra special for this school year, according to Garfield Principal Nicole Zaayer, since COVID-19 has canceled many of the traditional school events.
“We haven’t been able to have any of our traditional family nights like Reading Night and Math Night,” she said. “We really wanted a time just to be able to bring our families out and show them some love and we thought, ‘What better time than Valentine’s Day to have the kids drive through and get some Valentine’s Day candy and tell them that we love them?'”
Students received a bag filled with candy, a book, and math items. Zaayer also entered every student into a drawing to win a family movie night gift basket. Finally, each family drove through the “tunnel”, complete with decorated lights.
