Danville’s public works department worked 36 straight hours on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to clear the city’s streets of snow.
Public Works Director Carl Carpenter says crews cleared the city’s main arterial streets throughout the night, and continued removing snow from side streets during the day on Tuesday.
“There were people that came in at one o’clock this morning and did not leave until 3:30 this afternoon,” he said. “Trust me, they’re giving the city 100 percent when they’re doing that.”
Carpenter says that his employees took several phone calls on Tuesday from residents complaining about certain areas not being plowed, including one who called the police on the city, but he says many residents have misconceptions about what areas the city actually clears of snow. He says crews are not responsible for plowing the end of residents’ driveways nor for plowing alleys. The department does accept requests from residents with health challenges who need their streets cleared, and he says those are usually done first.
One snowplow broke down on Tuesday and will need to be replaced in the future. Carpenter says it is the second snow plow to fail in the last two years. Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. says the plow that services the Denvale subdivision was out of service for two hours on Tuesday, delaying some work across Lake Vermilion.
Carpenter says the temperature this weekend is expected to be in the mid-30’s and will warm up next week, so the snow will likely melt quickly.
